Anyone Got an Idea for a Book Cover Design?

Hello everybody! I've got an update on my first book scheduled to release in the next couple of months, and I would love your helpful input. I'm working with the publisher now on the cover design. Obviously, the image on the cover of a book is the first "impression" of the resource, and it must convey its message in a clear and compelling way. (For my first blog on the book, see my post dated 6/18/10 entitled First Book to Release in September!) Below is a brief description of the book which may appear on the back cover and some ideas I'm working with:

"Do you want to take your spiritual life to the next level? Do you long to know God’s Word better but don’t know how to study or apply its truth? Do you struggle with receiving God’s forgiveness and moving past your failures? Do you desire to connect with others in the Body of Christ and to serve them effectively? Do you want to help others throughout the world become more faithful and fruitful in their walk with Christ?

"If these questions describe the passion of your heart, Reaching the Next Level is just for you! This practical resource answers all of these questions and more. Whether you’re a new Believer or a 'seasoned veteran' in Christ, Reaching the Next Level will guide you on an exciting journey of discovery. You’ll learn practical ways to partner with others for spiritual growth, to experience the power of God’s life-transforming grace, and to practice six spiritual disciplines in your daily life."

Clearly the cover design needs to communicate the idea(s) of surging forward, moving ahead, transformation, climbing upward, etc. Here are some of the types of images I'm thinking of:

The way this process will work is that I'll be forwarding my thoughts and ideas to the publisher over the next couple of days, and he'll work on putting together some cover design options from which I'll need to select and approve one.

Well, what do you think? I would love your "vote" on any of the above images/ideas or any other suggestions you have. You can register your "vote" and thoughts by posting a comment to this blog. I'm not promising which direction I'll go. In fact, I'm not even sure if any of these images above could work because of copyright issues (these images are from Microsoft online free clipart). But I do believe what Proverbs 15:22 says: "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed."

Okay, thanks in advance for your help and insights. I look forward to hearing from you for some excellent ideas and thoughts! Blessings...

  1. First impression....I like the second image, with the guy and the ladder. Can't wait to see what you end up with, because I know it will be perfect!

  2. Hey Gail,

Thanks for the comment and input. I believe this was Wendy's "first choice" as well! I think the image definitely communicates the idea of "Reaching the Next Level" well. Okay, thanks again and have a blessed day!

  3. The first image caught my eye because of the bright colors. On the third image, I thought that was Joseph doing a stunt on his skateboard. However, the second image conveys the message you are bringing perfectly. No matter where we are in our spiritual walk, whether a babe or a so-called spiritual giant, we find ourselves as the guy in the second image, trying to reach the next level. As Paul wrote in Phil. 3:12-14, not that we have already attained perfection, but we press on continuously(to reach the next level). Pete whatever image you so choose God will honor it and use it to impact lives.

Hey Pete! I think the 2nd picture with the guy climbing the ladder would be my choice.. I pray that your book reaches other's, and that the Lord continues to use you in a mighty way.Good luck!

  5. Bro. Pete,

If you can find a picture with a stairway (maybe stone and circular in nature) with someone going up them or even just feet going up them. Just a thought.

  6. Well....I love the color of the first image; the blue sky & white clouds are so very inviting. Can we combine the color of image one with the actual shot in image two? No matter what is picked...plan on signing my copy :-)

  7. I'm so excited for you and the way this process is progressing at a "God speed"!!

If the book is about partnering with others, then maybe have more than one person on the cover....Mountain climbing maybe. One person could be reaching a hand back to the other person to help them. There could be a silouette of a cross at the top of the mountain as well.

The pic of the guy jumping looks too close to the Nike image.

    Enjoy the journey!!

  8. Out of the three, I think the second captures the concept best. I'll be on the lookout for other pictures. Good luck!

  9. I also liked the second image. Mark liked the first and the last. Which is really weird because we are usually in sync. But I'm sure your choice will be great. I didn't even know you wrote a book. Can't wait to read it.

  10. WOW! Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful comments and input. I LOVE your thoughts! It seems like the second image is clearly in the front of the race. Perhaps a combination between the first and second images would be good, too. Also, I appreciate the thought of one person reaching out to another since the book deals with partnering with others for spiritual growth as well. I thought the idea of the stone stairway with the feet is a good idea, too. Again, SO MANY good thoughts - there truly is wisdom in the multitude of counselors. Okay, I'll look forward to other thoughts, and I plan to begin communication with the publisher on this in the next couple of days. I'll try to keep everyone posted on the blog. Stay tuned, and thanks for all of your prayer support! Blessings...
